Longevity Briefs: The future of the science of aging, with Dr. Andrew Steele

Posted on 27 January 2021

Longevity briefs provides a short summary of novel research in biology, medicine, or biotechnology that caught the attention of our researchers in Oxford, due to its potential to improve our health, wellbeing, and longevity.

Dr. Andrew Steele is a scientist, writer and self-proclaimed stat lover who has recently released his first book, Ageless, which looks at the science behind the biological process of ageing.

Dr. Steele initially trained as a physicist, however, after becoming fascinated by a graph depicting how our chance of death exponentially increases with age, and the reasons behind these statistics, his new path was set.

Annual risk of death by age

In this captivating talk, hosted by well-known futurist, David Wood, for the London Futurists, Dr. Steele gives a brief overview of Ageless, exploring the biology of aging and looking at the impact that aging has on our society.

The breakdown:

  1. The societal impacts of ageing
  2. What is aging? – (6:41)
  3. Interspecies variation of aging – (13:08)
  4. The hallmarks of aging – (17:32)
  5. Should we cure aging? – (27:27)
  6. The economic cost of aging – (35:20)
