Widespread Coronavirus Antibody Testing in the UK Could be Available Within Days

Amazon is to deliver home testing kits to people self-isolating with symptoms. The kits will also be available for purchase in chemist shops.

The test involves a finger prick to draw blood, which is then analysed by a device. The test detects two types of antibodies: IgM, which is produced early on during infection, and IgG, a highly specific antibody that is produced later.

Unlike current testing, which measures the presence of the virus itself, this test would also confirm whether a person has previously been infected. This would potentially allow them to resume their normal lives and employment without fear of catching and spreading the infection – particularly important for healthcare workers.

The test’s effectiveness will be evaluated in Oxford this week, following which it will be made available.
