Think 80 Years Is A Long Time? Take a Look At This

It can be all too easy to drift through life on automatic, forever putting things off, but statistics and data can give a physicality to things we barely notice or consider most of the time. These diagrams might just give you an entirely new perspective on your life.

For instance, did you know that if you die at exactly 80 years old to the day, you’d have lived 29,200 days on this planet? How many hours might you have spent washing up? Or sleeping? When we pause and analyse our lives from afar, it can be shocking how many hours even menial tasks consume. What’s perhaps more shocking, is how small life becomes. Each week and month suddenly become part of a morbid countdown and you might begin to wonder what you’ve really accomplished in all the time leading up to this moment. Whether you regret spending last weekend on the couch or whether you could just do with more leisure time, when you set out even a relatively long human lifespan in a chart it begins to look terrifyingly diminutive.

These kind of figures might make you question whether the lifespan we are provided with really is that long after all. Youth might well be wasted on the young, as many people in their later years remark how short it all seems and how fast time flew by. The longevity movement at its heart is about valuing life, appreciating each moment and striving to extend the clock. People sadly often become galvanised only when they’re personally affected by something, whether through their own mortality or another’s. If more people took a minute to contemplate life, perhaps more would realise how painfully short it can be. The more people who support and sympathise with increasing both healthspan and lifespan, the closer we all come to a world with more time, and good quality time at that. Time is perhaps the most precious resource of all, but many people only truly understand that when their own allotment comes to a close.

“Sometimes life seems really short, and other times it seems impossibly long. But this chart helps to emphasize that it’s most certainly finite. Those are your weeks and they’re all you’ve got. Given that fact, the only appropriate word to describe your weeks is precious. There are trillions upon trillions of weeks in eternity, and those are your tiny handful.”
