Research published in Nature Communications has demonstrated that a new, tissue scaffolding technique could overcome the current issues with oxygenation that occur when rebuilding large tissue.
This technique involves artificial membrane binding proteins coupled with oxygen carrying myoglobin molecules bound to stem cells in a scaffold, coating them and increasing oxygen supply. Overcoming the challenges that limited oxygen levels represent when growing larger organs could prove to be a breakthrough in tissue engineering.
