These Eyedrops Could Dissolve Cataracts

Cataracts are the dominant cause of blindness across the globe and although they can be corrected with surgery, availability can be limited and the operation itself isn’t without risk of complications. In light of this, cheap and easy medication which could be distributed easily to poorer populations is a desirable alternative. 

New research has provided hope that a cheap eye drop solution may be able to reverse the build up of protein that occurs in cataracts. In the development, Lanosterol which is a component in steroids, was able to break down these notorious cloudy patches. It may be that the body produces sufficient lanosterol to halt the accumulation in younger years, but as we age application of additional lanosterol could help keep our eyes clear and functional.
