The book states:

The inhalation of tobacco smoke tends to cause irritation and congestion of the respiratory organs. Many diseases of the mouth and throat are induced or aggravated by the poisonous nicotine […] That very terrible disease called cancer of the throat, or cancer of the mouth, if not directly caused by the use of tobacco, is certainly aggravated by it.

Smoking remains the number one cause of non-communicable chronic disease besides ageing. In terms of overall health, stopping smoking is the single most impactful lifestyle choice an individual can make, yet over 1 billion people worldwide still smoke.
