New research indicates compounds in aged garlic can protect against arterial disease and show some reversal of existing plaques
The new research was conducted at LA Biomed and involved 55 patients diagnosed with metabolic syndrome, aged between 40 and 75. Those who weren’t in the placebo group were given 2400 mg of aged garlic extract every day. Their total coronary plaque volume, dense calcium, non-calcified plaque and low-attenuation plaque was first screened using a non-invasive imaging technique, and then measured again a year after this treatment.
“This study is another demonstration of the benefits of this supplement in reducing the accumulation of soft plaque and preventing the formation of new plaque in the arteries, which can cause heart disease. We have completed four randomized studies, and they have led us to conclude that Aged Garlic Extract can help slow the progression of atherosclerosis and reverse the early stages of heart disease”
After a year’s treatment, the extract was found to reduce plaque accumulation by up to 80%, reduce soft plaque and even regress low-attenuation plaque. Considering cardiovascular disease is the number 1 killer worldwide, further research on what specific compounds are helping could create new treatments. Although aging garlic increases the beneficial compounds, eating more garlic may have similar protective effects.
